Robot Vowels

Formant filters, often called vowel filters, are an expressive tool that mimics the resonant characteristics of the human vocal tract.

By shaping frequencies to resemble vowel sounds like “ah”, “ee”, or “oo”, they can transform otherwise ordinary tones into something that’s alive and organic.

Other formant filters exist, but Robot Vowels is special. We recorded multiple human singers, so the frequency responses match actual recordings of people singing.

Those recordings form waypoints in the large morphing area, making it possible to smoothly transition from one vowel sound to another.

Oh yeah, ah yeah!

Robot Vowels uses linear predictive coding (LPC) to filter. Those paying attention will note that’s just like our vocoder, Robot Rocket. Linear predictive coding filters sound incredibly cool.

Linear predictive coding is a less common technique. We’re not aware of another formant filter plugin that uses it.

Analog modelled distortion

Robot Vowels features three different distortion types that have been modelled on analog hardware. They range from subtle to in-your-face, and can add tasty crunch to your signal.

If you’d prefer to keep things clean, turning off distortion will provide access to the filter alone. We’re not judging, but distortion is good.

Requirements

Robot Vowels is an audio plugin. It is available as an Audio Unit version 3 and VST3 plugin for macOS and Windows.

Robot Vowels works with a wide range of audio apps. We have setup guides for Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Reaper, and Bitwig.

When you purchase Robot Vowels, all 1.x updates are included. There’s also a 30-day free trial, so you can use it for a while before making up your mind.
